The Dangers of Distracted Driving – A Sobering Reminder from Mennie Heizler Law Group

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and at Mennie Heizler Law Group, we’ve seen firsthand how devastating distracted driving accidents can be. Whether it's answering a quick text, adjusting the GPS, or simply losing focus for a few seconds, the consequences can be life changing.

The Reality of Distracted Driving

The numbers speak for themselves:

  • 3,000 deaths annually – Over 3,000 lives are lost each year to distracted driving, averaging nine fatalities per day.
  • Phone use is a major factor – 14% of fatal crashes in the U.S. involve cell phone use.
  • Drivers admit to distractions – 47% admit to texting while driving, and 57% admit to adjusting a GPS while on the road.
  • Five seconds of danger – Texting while driving takes a driver’s eyes off the road for an average of five seconds—enough time to cover a football field at highway speeds.
  • Younger drivers are most at risk – Those aged 20–39 are responsible for 42% of distracted driving incidents, while teens are involved in 6% of fatal crashes.
